Conversion Gun Sidematch Rules

These rules apply to sidematches which may be run concurrently with standard IDPA events.

PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLES:
This special class of firearms exists specifically to allow competitors to continue to improve skills related to the normal IDPA gun classes, but with a reduced ammunition cost and easier ammunition availability.

RULES
  • Unless otherwise specified, all current IDPA rules apply.
  • The IDPA "Purpose" and "Principles" (pages 4 and 5 of the 2005 rulebook), with the exception of "full charge service ammunition", are the guiding lights that must be followed.
  • Guns used must be functionally and stylistically equivalent to the existing class guns, i.e. 22 cal conversion units on a CDP, ESP, or SSP gun, or a 22 caliber version of a revolver.
  • No "target" 22's allowed i.e. S&W 41, HS Victor, etc.
  • All IDPA handgun rules regarding characteristics (action type, barrel length, etc) transfer to the respective .22 caliber gun class.
  • All IDPA holster and ammunition carrier rules transfer to these classes.
  • To participate in these alternate gun classes, the shooter must be rated at least Marksman in the associated "real" class (to promote this alternate shooting class as a lower cost continuation for existing shooters, not as an entry point for new shooters).
  • Shooters that wish to shoot "2 guns" at a club match may shoot the same gun class for both guns.
  • Steel will be not require knockdowns, only hits.  If a knockdown is required to activate other props, tough.
  • These alternate gun classes are not applicable to classifier matches.
  • Contestants are allowed to shoot a maximum of every other match with the conversion gun and then must shoot their next match with full charge ammunition.  Classifiers count as a "full charge ammunition" match.
  • Clearing of the semi auto rimfire firearm may be done without dropping the hammer on an empty chamber by the following process:   At Unload and Show Clear, the competitor will remove the magazine and place it in a pocket or holder, then clear the chamber letting the round fall to  the ground or pocketing it.  NO AMMO IN HAND FOR THE REST OF THESE STEPS!  Both the competitor and SO will inspect to verify that the magazine is absent and the chamber is clear.  The competitor then lowers the slide, and once again retracts it for a second inspection of clear, and lowers the slide.  The gun may now be holstered.

22 caliber gun class designations:

  • 22revolver (6 rounds max utilized per loading - as many fullsize 22 revolvers may have cylinders that hold more that 6 cartridges, the competitor may load more than 6, but may only shoot a max of 6 rounds before reloading.  On reloads, if 6 shots have been expended since the previous load, there will be no penalty assessed for dumping live rounds in excess of the 6 empties).
  • 22 pistol (10 rounds in mags for SSP and ESP equivalent, 8 rounds for CDP equivalent); gun action, etc. equivalent to SSP, CDP, or ESP)

SPECIAL NOTE ON ROUNDS IN THE GUN:
See the "PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLES" if there are questions on this.
If you're shooting a revolver, and the particular gun you have holds 10 rounds, and you think "It's not fair, I can score better if I shoot all 10 rounds before reloading", then you're not realizing what this conversion gun sidematch is all about.  Go back and reread the "PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLES".

Scores will be reported totally separately from normal class results.
